June 2017 Alabama Night Sky Workshop
June 2017 Alabama Night Sky Workshop
Let’s shoot the night sky over Alabama!
There is nothing more magical than shooting the Milky Way.
Night Sky Photography Workshop presented by Melissa Baines!
All the images before the sunset image are from the location we will be shooting at. The rest are my images from around the US.
Here is what one happy workshopper had to say:
“I learned so much from Melissa Baines and her Night Sky photography workshop. Please check out Melissa Baines Graphic Design & Photography. I still am new to learning this type of photography and I'm excited to learn more! I recommend Melissa Baines and her workshops as well! She is an excellent teacher and is very knowledgeable in this area of photography!”
The workshop is for anyone and everyone who would like to learn to shoot the night sky.
You will need to have a basic understanding of how to shoot in Manual mode. You will need to have your own camera (Full frame for best results), wide angle lens (with a 2.8 aperture for the best results), and a tripod. There are many options for renting equipment. I have not personally rented equipment; therefore, I cannot recommend one company over the other.
You will learn how to capture the Milky Way, night sky, create star trails, and we will play with light painting.
You will learn:
How to find the Milky Way
How to focus on the night sky
About noise reduction
The perfect settings for your equipment
If you choose to get the editing package you will watch me edit 3 images from start to finish. 2 of the images were captured from the location of the workshop. The third was taken in my back yard in West Mobile with tons of light pollution. BONUS you will learn how to cut thru light pollution and create awesome detailed images even in horrible light conditions.
You will be able to edit your images along with me using the presets and brushes I used to edit my images.
June 23rd-24th, 2017: We will shoot the nights of 23rd and 24th.
We will start Friday night @ 7:30pm. We will shoot the sunset and talk about work flow and composition. Then we will start into Night sky as the light disappears.
St. Stephens Park in St. Stephens, Alabama (Note your GPS may not get you to the park, print a map)
You are on your own for lodging and food.
There is camping, full RV hook ups, and cabins on the grounds. For Lodging reservations Call (251) 247-2622 (Note: reserving your lodging does not book the workshop, that can only be done through this website). Also check out St. Stephens Park on Facebook and Google- Click here to go to their website.
To see an example of the cabins go to the photos. You can find the price list for the park in the photos too.
There are restaurants and hotels 20mins away.
The weather is uncontrollable. We will stay out and shoot until the conditions become unsafe (ex: all night lightning storm). Please come prepared to shoot in the rain just in case. There is an area with overhead cover that we can use until the sky clears. We will have two nights to capture the stars and no matter the weather, you will walk away with the knowledge and capability to shoot the night sky.
The workshop will only be cancelled if the weather is dangerous for both nights. Refunds will not be given, I will reschedule. You can obtain trip insurance for your protection if you feel the need. I have not personally worked with an insurance company, so I do not recommend any certain insurance company.
Shooting Instruction during one night $150 (Limited to 10 people per/night)
Shooting Instruction during two nights $250 (Limited to 10 people per/night)

Both nights shooting instruction, 1 hour personal editing assistance, and access to videos/presets $400 (Only 5 people are able to sign up for personal editing assistance)
The personal editing assistance hour, will be a one on one session at the park. Here is how it works: You will sign up for a time slot once we are at the park, for me to come and assist you in editing one of your images from the night before. To get the most out of your hour have your computer and image ready and loaded into Lightroom. You are more than welcome to go ahead and play with the image before your time, right down questions as you go. I'm choosing to do a one on one session so you are able to get more out of the time and not hold back asking questions.
